Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

IUI, which stands for Intrauterine Insemination, is a fertility treatment that helps sperm reach the egg for fertilization. It involves placing specially prepared sperm directly inside a woman's uterus, bypassing the cervix, and giving the sperm a head start in its journey to meet the egg.

1. What it does?

Increases the chances of pregnancy: By placing the sperm closer to the egg, IUI gives them a better chance of meeting and fertilizing it. This can be helpful for couples with various fertility issues, including:
• Unexplained infertility
• Mild male infertility
• Cervical mucus problems
• Ovulation disorders

2. Timing

IUI is typically done around the time of ovulation, when the egg is released from the ovary and ready for fertilization. This may involve monitoring ovulation with ovulation tests or ultrasound.

3. Sperm preparation

The sperm is washed and prepared to remove any non-sperm cells or debris that could hinder fertilization.

4. Insemination

Using a thin catheter, the prepared sperm is placed directly inside the uterus through the cervix. The procedure itself is usually quick and painless, taking only a few minutes.

5. Benefits of IUI

• Minimally invasive: Compared to other fertility treatments like in vitro fertilization (IVF), IUI is a less invasive and more affordable option.
• Natural conception: IUI allows for fertilization to happen naturally, unlike IVF which involves fertilizing the egg outside the body.
• High success rate: For couples with mild fertility issues, IUI can have a success rate of 15-20% per cycle.

6. Things to consider

• Not a guarantee: IUI doesn't guarantee pregnancy, and success rates can vary depending on individual factors.
• Multiple cycles may be needed: It may take several IUI cycles before pregnancy is achieved.
• Emotional and physical challenges: Fertility treatments can be emotionally and physically demanding, so it's important to have adequate support.
